Ford Bronco owners looking for a safe and secure way to store their gear in the cargo area need look no further than Ford’s Cargo Area Security Drawer. This storage area securely mounts to the underside of the cargo area floor, allowing Bronco owners to conveniently store important items like tools, first aid kits, repair supplies, and more and keep them from sliding around or getting mixed in with other gear. Not only is this Ford solution a convenient way to keep gear out of the way, but it also promotes peace of mind by adding an extra layer of security to protect cargo from being siphoned off by would-be thieves, especially when you chose to take the top off your Bronco. Ford has ensured that all Bronco owners can have worry-free access to all their stored items at any time.
Customizations for Cargo Security Drawer
I like the security drawer, it’s a solid direct bolt accessory, holds a lot of gear, and keeps my belongings safe. However, to be a permanent part of your Bronco, I’d suggest a few modifications to make it function even better. Mainly, in my case, I wanted things to look factory and I wanted things to be quiet.
Modify Ford Lasso Trim Pieces
The first mod I made was to the Ford Lasso Trim Pieces. Many folks complained that the mounting hardware for the security drawer requires the removal of the Ford “lasso” trim pieces that cover the bolts for the Ford OEM Cargo Loops. And they do unless you modify them. I found that using a stepdown drill bit or a Dremel tool you can create a hole so that the trim pieces slide down over the hexagonal pieces. They fit through a 3/4″ hole too, if you just want to drill them with a larger bit (dont’ use a paddle bit or you’ll shred them).
Vinyl Covering to Reduce Rattles
When I put hard-sided cases or other items in the cargo area, I noticed a rattle, so I grabbed a trimmed piece of vinyl garage flooring from my local big box store. Then I punched holes for the cargo loops and mounted them over top the vinyl flooring. This worked well, but there was still a drum like beat when I went over bumps. Also, there is a gap on both sides of the drawer that allowed small items to fall in and wastes some of the storage space.
Modified Ford Bronco Cargo Mat
To fix the final problems, I used some of my Ford Rewards points from the purchase of my Bronco. To purchase the OEM Ford Bronco Mat (affiliate link). I then transferred the drill holes for the mounting bolts and mounted it to the top of the drawer. It covers the gaps and prevents items from falling alongside and getting lost. While I chose to install the thick OEM cargo mat, the Mabatt Cargo Mat (affiliate link) on Amazon is much cheaper.
Summary – Secure Cargo Storage with a Finished Look
The only downside to this drawer is that it obstructs access to your spare tire tools. Because the spare tire tools are located in the floor of the cargo area, they are not easily accessible. You will need to remove the drawer and its contents to get to them. Otherwise, the heavy duty lock system makes good use of the rear cargo area.
The smooth sliding drawer helps protect gear and the adjustable dividers keep it well organized. I also like the Bronco logo text across the back to make it look factory. Overall, the cabinet handles plenty of weight, and the dividers can ensure the gear is held in place. The installation is fairly easy and requires no drilling unless you choose to customize as I did. The only downside is the drawer indicates the max top load is 50lbs. Also, the gear slide space is also rated for 50lbs, so load up more gear at your own risk.
Despite these limitations, the cargo drawer may be my favorite modification to my vehicle, at least from a usability perspective. All you need to install the drawer is an adjustable wrench, but sockets would help complete the installation more quickly.
